Turkiye says Iran acted in legitimate self-defense

Turkish FM Hakan Fidan defended Iran’s military response as legitimate self-defense. He accused Netanyahu of provoking war for internal political reasons.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Iran’s recent military response to Israeli aggression was an act of legitimate self-defense.

Speaking on Friday night, Fidan said Türkiye had anticipated that the conflict would not remain confined to Gaza and would eventually expand to include Iran—something that has now occurred.

He further claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initiated the war against Iran to address internal political challenges.

On Friday, June 13, Israel launched a military strike on Tehran and other Iranian cities, including nuclear facilities, in what Iran described as a violation of its sovereignty and international law. The attack resulted in the deaths of scientists, military personnel, and civilians.

Following this, on Sunday, June 22, the United States joined the conflict by targeting Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi invoked Article 51 of the UN Charter, affirming Iran’s right to defend its national interests and people.

On Tuesday, June 24, the U.S. president announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Iran clarified that it had not started the war and would not continue retaliatory actions if Israeli aggression ceased.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council later issued a statement declaring that the country’s armed forces remain fully prepared to deliver a decisive response to any future attacks, expressing deep distrust in enemy assurances.
